The 2009 TSANZ ASM will be held from 4 - 8 April in the newly completed Darwin Convention Centre in Australia's "top end". The trip to Darwin represents a new venture for the Society. There will be a strong focus on Indigenous Health The opening plenary will feature International Indigenous Health, with guest speaker Rosalyn Singleton, local speaker Paul Torzillo, and Ramon Pink from New Zealand offering a Maori perspective. This will be followed by a conjoint TSANZ/ANZSRS plenary featuring invited speakers Josep Roca, Graham Hall and Andrew Thornton on Predicted Values and Ethnicity. The closing plenary session on the Wednesday morning will consider Ethical Dilemmas and will feature Philip Nitschke. The Wunderly Orator for 2009 is Alex Brown, Head of the Centre for Indigenous Vascular and Diabetes Research in Alice Springs. The TSANZ will host an Educational Symposium of the APSR (ESAP) featuring a state-of-the-art update on infectious disease, with a particular focus on issues relating to tropical and remote regions, including Multi-Resistant TB, Malaria, Melioidosis, Suppurative Lung Disease, Avian and other emerging strains of Influenza. Other pre-conference activities will include the Short Course for Advanced Trainees and Respiratory Nurses SIG Symposium. A new development for 2009 will be the ALF Active Afternoon on Monday 6 April. Designed to revitalise flagging delegates, and as an acknowledgement to the Australian sporting heritage, activities will be facilitated by the Australian Lung Foundation. A range of activities will cater for all levels from the moribund to Olympian aspirants and we hope all delegates will participate in order to raise funds for the ALF. Darwin, the Northern Territory's tropical harbour, is a stepping stone to some of the world's greatest adventure playgrounds. The weather is always warm, and locals and visitors alike make the most of Darwin's balmy climate and lush setting with a constant celebration of life outdoors at open-air cinemas, restaurants, bars, markets and festivals, or fishing or cruising on its unspoilt harbour. We look forward to seeing you in far North Australia next March and have our Hawaiian shirts packed in anticipation!
