A variety of Awards, Fellowships and Grants are available and are presented each year at the TSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting.

Applications and Nominations for the 2010 awards have now closed but details are listed below for reference purposes.

Where an award/grant is marked Open to TSANZ Members Only, it is not sufficient to be in the process of applying for membership when you apply for one of these awards/grants. Please note that applications for membership will be considered at the Executive meeting following processing of completed application form and receipt of fees.

ALF / Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Research Fellowship [WORD] The Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Research Fellowship is aimed at developing and/or delivering optimal care to people with COPD. The Fellowship is available as either a one or two year award, with a value of Aus $75,000 per annum to support research undertaken within Australia or New Zealand, conducted within disciplines as diverse as physiology, genetics, epidemiology, health economics or management in General Practice/primary health care settings.

ALF / Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Fund Grant-in-Aid - 2009 / 2010 [WORD] The Slater & Gordon Asbestos Research Grant-in-Aid is to foster research to further advance curative, palliative or preventative treatment options for those burdened with asbestos related diseases. The Grant-in-Aid is valued at Aus $30,000 for one year, and may be used to support technical staff and/or equipment, and/or consumables involved in establishing or supporting a respiratory research project and/or contribute towards the applicant's salary. The research must relate specifically to asbestos related diseases and be conducted in Australia or New Zealand.

ALF Lung Cancer Program Cochrane Review Scholarship [WORD] The Lung Cancer Program Cochrane Review Scholarship is specifically designed to assist a medical undergraduate in undertaking a research project providing a systematic and up-to-date summary of reliable evidence of the benefits and risks of healthcare for lung cancer.

ALF Lung Cancer Program Postgraduate Grant-in-Aid For Lung Cancer Research [WORD]   The Lung Cancer Program Postgraduate Grant-in-Aid is designed to facilitate lung cancer research by suitably qualified medical and allied health practitioners (including nursing).

ALF Lung Cancer Program Undergraduate Grant-in-Aid For Lung Cancer Research [WORD] This Lung Cancer Program Undergraduate Grant-in-Aid is designed to assist either a medical or allied health (including nursing) undergraduate in undertaking a research project into lung cancer.

Ann Woolcock Young Investigator Award [WORD] The Ann Woolcock Young Investigator Award is made for excellence in the conduct and presentation of scientific research during the recipient's first substantive research project. Applicants must submit an abstract for the TSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM), and an extended abstract outlining the background and significance of their work. After evaluation by the TSANZ Education and Research Subcommittee, finalists present their paper for judging in a plenary session at the ASM. The winner will be awarded a cheque for Aus $1,500 and a Travelling Fellowship for expenses related to attendance and presentation at the ASM of the Asia-Pacific Society of Respirology. Finalists will also receive $500.

Janet Elder International Travel Awards (NEW) [WORD] Travel awards valued at between $2,500 and $5,000 and will be awarded to three respiratory scientists or clinicians on the basis of scientific merit of their submitted abstract to the 2010 TSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting. The award will facilitate participation in an international Scientific Meeting of the applicant's choice to support their professional development in respiratory research. These awards are made in the memory of Dr Janet Elder, one of the pioneers of respiratory medicine in Western Australia.

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers International Travel Awards [WORD] Three travel awards, a Senior Travel Award valued at Aus $5,000 and two Junior Travel Awards valued at Aus $2,500 each, will be awarded to three scientists or clinicians on the basis of scientific merit of their submitted abstract to the TSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). The award will facilitate participation in an international Scientific Meeting of the applicant's choice. The presentation will be in the area of occupational and environmental lung disease, with preference given to studies on asbestos-related diseases, and the recipient will be the presenting author of the abstract.

Merck Sharp & Dohme Peter Phelan Travel Fellowship (Paediatric) [WORD] The Peter Phelan Travel Grant is an annual award up to the value of Aus $7,500 to support an Advanced Trainee in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine or any member of TSANZ undertaking research in the area of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine. The grant will allow them to travel nationally or internationally to further develop specific aspects of their training (eg to undertake a research fellowship, to learn a specific technical skill for a research project) and/or to make a presentation at a major scientific meeting relevant to respiratory medicine. Preference will be given to a candidate travelling overseas to a training position and who intends to return to Australia to work full time in the area of Paediatric Respiratory Medicine (as a clinician or scientist).

Robert Pierce Grant-in-Aid for Indigenous Lung Health (NEW) [WORD] This Grant-in-Aid, to honour the memory of the late Professor Rob Pierce, is to be awarded to a member of the TSANZ for a project focused on understanding and improving the lung health of indigenous people in Australia and/or New Zealand. Project support to the value of Aus $15,000 for one year will contribute to the delivery of better health care and/or the professional development of the applicant in this field.

Slater & Gordon International Mesothelioma Travel Grant [WORD] This Aus $5,000 travel award is made to the presenting author of the best abstract on mesthelioma submitted to the TSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). The award is designed to foster international networking and/or facilitate career development for junior or senior clinicians or scientists working in the Australasian research community on mesothelioma. The Award for 2010 will support attendance at the annual meeting of the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (17-21 April 2010, Washington DC, USA).

TSANZ / Allen & Hanburys Paediatric Career Development Grant-in-Aid [WORD] The Allen & Hanburys Grant-in-Aid is to foster the development of paediatric respiratory medicine and is valued at Aus $40,000 per annum for two consecutive years. The Grant-in-Aid allows young paediatric advanced trainees to undertake a two year development programme to enter into the practice of paediatric respiratory medicine or apply for post-training research fellowships that would lead to an academic career.

TSANZ / Allen & Hanburys Respiratory Research Fellowship [WORD] The Allen & Hanburys Respiratory Research Fellowship aims to foster the development of research in respiratory medicine. The Fellowship is valued at Aus $70,000 per annum for two consecutive years and allows researchers to undertake a two year research program under the supervision of an established expert in the field of respiratory medicine.

TSANZ / Japanese Respiratory Society Early Career Development Award [WORD]   The Japanese Respiratory Society (JRS) Early Career Development Award is designed to reward, encourage and provide international exposure early in the career of a graduate who has recently completed advanced training or a higher degree by thesis in respiratory medicine. The Award covers expenses related to the attendance and presentation of research at the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) of the JRS.

TSANZ Best Poster Award [WORD] This award recognizes the most outstanding contribution to respiratory research, irrespective of discipline, presented as a poster at the Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM). The award is valued at Aus $1,000, with the winner selected from posters shortlisted from each mentored SIG poster session during the ASM based on both content and clarity of presentation.
All abstracts via the ONLINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION FORM and presented as posters will be considered for this award, and no separate application is required.

TSANZ President’s Award [WORD] Nominations from TSANZ members are sought for The President's Award, open to any member of the community who has demonstrated a strong track record in promoting respiratory health. The Award may be made in recognition of outstanding contributions to scientific research, community action, health promotion or advocacy, particularly in the area of tobacco control.

TSANZ Research Medal [WORD] Nominations from TSANZ members are sought for the Research Medal, open to all members and associate members of TSANZ. The Medal may be awarded in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of knowledge in respiratory medicine or science carried out primarily in Australia or New Zealand, and recognizes an individual who has demonstrated sustained excellence in their field.

TSANZ Special Interest Group Awards These awards recognize the most outstanding oral or poster communication made at the Annual Scientific Meeting within each of the Special Interest Groups of TSANZ, and are valued at Aus $500 each.
All abstracts submitted via the ONLINE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION FORM will be considered for these awards, and no separate application is required.

TSANZ Travel Awards to ASM [WORD] The travel awards are made to encourage eligible members to attend and enrich the TSANZ Annual Scientific Meeting (ASM) through presentation of their work and active participation in the meeting. The applicant's salary should not exceed that of the NHMRC PSP3 (currently Aus $66,250).
