Laboratory Accreditation Assessor Training

TSANZ runs a detailed and rigorous program of laboratory accreditation across Australia and New Zealand. Currently we have over 40 accredited laboratories with a number of new laboratories planning their applications. A panel of three voluntary assessors is appointed to each application for accreditation, and TSANZ seeks expressions of interest from members who would like to join a panel. Currently we have over 50 experienced assessors on our database with new assessors sought.

Panel members (one is appointed as Chair) review the application and manuals from the laboratory against the TSANZ Program Manual and Standards and complete a template report on this Initial Evaluation. This process takes 6 to 8 weeks and is followed by a one-hour teleconference to discuss the panel’s findings. The Chair then prepares a composite report that is sent to the laboratory for their written response.

Following a satisfactory written response, a one day site visit is scheduled to verify the lab’s procedures reflect their application and manuals. The panel Chair completes a site visit report with the assistance of the panel and accreditation may be recommended for five years. If there are any mandatory requirements before accreditation can be recommended, the panel will review the lab’s response to these within four months.

Being a panel member gives assessors an insight into best-practice standards and the chance to assist peers with quality assurance benchmarks for respiratory laboratories. It is a collegiate and interactive process with good networking potential.

Panel members receive gratis travel and accommodation and are paid any out-of-pocket expenses and a small honorarium for their time.
