Dr Nick Coatsworth - Australian Federal Deputy CMO
Dr Nick Coatsworth is one of Australia’s Deputy Chief Medical Officers. He is also the Executive Director of the Medical Services Group at Canberra Health Services. Nick held a key national role in the Australian response to COVID-19. Bringing together his skills as an infectious disease physician, a respiratory physician, a practitioner of disaster and humanitarian medicine, and high-level experience in health administration, Nick’s contribution provided a voice for frontline hospital staff in the national response to the pandemic. He became one of the most recognised medical spokespeople during the pandemic, engaging the Australian community through a variety of media platforms.

Professor Ian Town - New Zealand Ministry of Health Chief Science Advisor
Ian Town is the Chief Science Advisor at the New Zealand Ministry of Health.

Ian Town has worked across both the health and education sectors during his 30-year career. A physician by training, he has published extensively in respiratory medicine. Much of this research has been implemented through evidenced based guidelines for the management of common conditions such as asthma, COPD and pneumonia. Following an 8-year period at the University of Canterbury as Deputy Vice-Chancellor he has had a wide range of roles and has recently completed a 5-year term as the Chair of the Health Precinct Advisory Council leading one of the key Christchurch Earthquake recovery projects.

In his role as Chief Science Advisor he is leading the Ministry’s work to implement the New Zealand Health Research Strategy (2017-2027) in partnership with MBIE and the HRC.

Since February 2020 he has been working full-time on the Government’s COVID-19 Response.

Professor John Upham - TSANZ President-Elect

John Upham is a respiratory physician and clinician scientist who is interested in immune dysfunction in lung diseases and innovative approaches to improving patient care. After clinical training in Brisbane, John undertook research training in Western Australia and Canada. He currently holds appointments with Princess Alexandra Hospital and the University of Queensland and is the Chair of Metro South Research.
