Course Description
Five years ago, genomic sequencing was restricted to the research environment but now it is increasingly used in clinical practice, with genomic medicine making headway in the diagnosis of children with rare and chronic diseases. Barriers to widespread clinical implementation span diverse domains, including workforce capacity and capability, public acceptability and government engagement. The Inaugural Australian chILD Virtual Summit will provide a short Genomic update and access to further resources to clinicians, patient groups and specialties, including Respiratory, to address the current lack of up-to-date access to latest research and findings.

In the Australian health care landscape, similarly to other high-income nations, it has been found that research priority setting activities in paediatric chronic disease child/caregiver involvement is uncommon, and the methods often lack clarity. As such, the Summit will be a held across two separate virtual sessions for the specialist and patient groups, both focusing on genomics research with a special interest in Interstitial Lung Disease in the paediatric cohort (chILD) and a systematic and explicit process to inform a more patient and family-relevant research agenda in paediatric chronic disease. Research priorities identified by children, caregivers and health professionals emphasise a focus on life participation, psychosocial well-being, impact on family and quality of care.
