Time: 10am AEDT

Duration: 45 minutes

Only limited places available! Don't miss out!

We have been aware of an increasing number of cases of silicosis over the last few years. However, in September, a denominator became known. Health Surveillance of just two businesses involved in artificial stone kitchen benchtop fabrication, totalling 35 people, identified 12 cases, half of whom had Progressive Massive Fibrosis. Most were asymptomatic. Recently, WorkCover Queensland has accepted 22 cases in a 3-week period, including a worker as young as 27 years of age.

Artificial stone contains over 90% silica and workers fabricating benchtops from this product can be exposed to extreme levels of respirable crystalline silica dust. This presentation will provide an overview of silicosis, what makes accelerated silicosis different, the process of artificial stone benchtop fabrication, and up to date information about the emerging epidemic.
