TSANZ Webinar Series - Pollution-Related Health Effects from the Australian Bushfires with Professor Guy Marks and Dr David Meredith
Event Date: 21st Apr 20
Date: POSTPONED until 21st April 2020
Time: 11:30am - 12:30pm AEST
Duration: approximately 1hr
This unprecedented fire season during the final quarter of 2019 and until February 2020 is when bushfires burned many forested regions and smoke affected large numbers of Australians. Data on hospital admissions, deaths and ambulance callouts is not yet available but existing data has allowed researchers to model the overall health burden of smoke exposure – contributing to 400 deaths and more than 4000 hospital attendances – many times the number killed by the fires themselves. This webinar will provide an overview of the distribution of the recent bushfires, about poor air quality and its health effects, particulate matter and lung deposition and how the crisis impacted a mining community at risk of being inflicted by a coal mine fire.
Speakers:
- Professor Guy Marks, University of NSW, NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow - Air pollution mapping; public health and clinical impacts of smoke from bushfire
- Dr David Meredith, Head of Health Services, Coal Services - The impact of the fires on the NSW mining regions and the industry's response
