TSANZ Past Presidents Scholarship Award

The Past Presidents Scholarship Award aims to support early career researchers (ECRs) who do not have the resources available to them via their institution or workplace to:

1)  Develop their presentation of research skills, and/or

2) Present their research at a national or international professional conference of their choice.

The Scholarship will cover

  • Airfares
  • Accommodation
  • Ground travel and transfers
  • Registration
  • Per Diem Daily Allowance in accordance with the ATO Reasonable Travel and Meal Allowance Guide

Up to a maximum of AUD 7000, with the amount to be paid dependent on the delivery of receipts for the expenses incurred above.

Additionally, the Scholarship will provide the awardee with support from a TSANZ Past President to review their presentation and provide feedback and professional development on research presentation skills. The Past President will be determined by TSANZ.


This Scholarship is open to all members of the Society from all professional groups. To be eligible for the award, the applicant must:

  1. Be a current member of the TSANZ[1],

Be an early career researcher - enrolled in a research higher degree or up to five years (plus career disruptions) post PhD or other research postgraduate qualification.

Applicants must submit only an electronic application as a single PDF file via the online abstract submission portal.

In order to be considered for this award, your application must be submitted by the deadline and must include:

  • A letter from the applicant detailing the proposed use of the funds, including details of proposed conference and abstract, and the implication of this award on the applicants’ career.
  • A letter of support from the applicant’s supervisor or employer, including a statement that the applicant does not have access to support funds.

Track record or evidence of ECR status[1].

Selection Process

Applications will be assessed by a Committee of Past Presidents according to the following criteria (based on NHMRC criteria):

Significance and Innovation


Track Record relative to opportunity


Applicants need and potential




The review and ranking process will be reviewed for endorsement by the Research Subcommittee.

  • A diverse sphere of research methods and traditions are encouraged to apply. The Past Presidents will take into consideration the TSANZ Diversity and Inclusion principles as part of their decision making.
  • Please note, in the event of there being no suitable applicants the fellowship may not be awarded.
  • The award will be presented at the next TSANZ ASM; however, the successful applicant will be notified prior to the ASM.
