Lung Foundation Australia / Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Fellowship supports research to improve the diagnosis and management of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Australia. Specifically, the proposed research must be aimed at developing and/or delivering optimal care to people with COPD.  

Relevant domains of research inquiry range from evaluation of population screening initiatives; interventions to improve diagnostic accuracy within primary care; investigations of basic science which has a direct benefit to patients; through to issues of management in the context of a clinician-patient interaction to system level issues to do with the organisation, financing and performance of the health system, including COPD management of indigenous and ethnic minorities within Australia.

Lung Foundation Australia invites applications from medical and scientific graduates who will be resident in Australia throughout the period of the research program. The Fellowship is available as either a one or two year award, with a value of $A80,000 per annum. The funds are to cover the salary (including on-costs) for the successful research fellow and for no other purpose.


  • A current member of Lung Foundation Australia, and 
  • A current member of the TSANZ[1]

The following conditions apply to this award:

  1. Extra weighting will apply to applications that are considered early to mid career researchers that are less than 10 years post doc.
  2. The recipient is required to submit a final report to the Lung Foundation within 3 months of the end of the Fellowship term, in accordance with the award guidelines.
  3. For those recipients awarded a 2 year Fellowship; an interim report must be submitted within 12 months demonstrating significant progress with the research project to secure the ongoing funding in the second year.
  4. The Fellowship will be awarded at the next Annual Scientific Meeting of the TSANZ and must be taken up within 12 months of receipt.
  5. The recipient is required to submit the results of the research for presentation at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the TSANZ within 12 months of completion.
  6. Any publication(s) arising from this research should acknowledge the Lung Foundation Australia / Boehringer Ingelheim COPD Research Fellowship as a source of support.
  7. In the event of there being no suitable applicants, the Fellowship may not be awarded.

A track record

  • This will be a maximum two of A4 pages. Include any significant career disruptions supporting eligibility outside the listed criteria.


  • Publications over the last five years, excluding career disruptions (unlimited pages).


  • All text must be submitted on A4 pages with a 2cm margin to the top, bottom, left and right. Text must be single line spaced, with size 12 Times New Roman font. No columns are permitted.

Selection Process

The Research Sub-Committee of the Thoracic Society of Australia and New Zealand (TSANZ) will assess all applications. Applications will be assessed using the following scoring system:
