Aim

‘Lungs for Life’ is a strategic collaboration between TSANZ and LFA to address the disproportional underfunding of respiratory research in Australia.

This Research Award aims to provide seed funding for critical and impactful areas of respiratory research. Preference will be given to research proposals in the priorities areas of early lung development, infection, and lung cancer. Three research proposals will be funded.

The Research Award value will total $40,000. Funds will be offered as $20,000 from Lungs for Life and must be matched with equal or greater funding from the applicant’s institution.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this travel grant, the applicant must:

  • A current member of the TSANZ[1], and
  • A current member of Lung Foundation Australia, and
  • A citizen or permanent resident of Australia or New Zealand.

[1] Financial member of the TSANZ who has obtained the support of a proposer and seconder and has been endorsed by the TSANZ Board.

Conditions

The following conditions must be meet by members receiving this award:

  • The research must be undertaken in Australia or New Zealand.
  • Matched funding must be a minimum of $20,000 cash from the partnered institution.
  • All applications must include a senior researcher as an investigator.
  • The recipient of this award is expected to submit their research at a future TSANZ ASM and provide a report to the Lungs for Life Management Committee summarising the outcomes of the research within six months of completion.
  • Support must be acknowledged in any reports or publications arising from the research.

Note: These conditions must be met to remain eligible for future award rounds.

Applications will contain the following;

Research Proposal

  • A proposal clearly identifying the investigators and institution, research questions, methodology, statistical analysis, and feasibility of completing the project within the time frame, and budget (three A4 pages maximum, plus references).
  • Description of the project in non-specialised language, and proposal for any future work of the research (one A4 page maximum)
  • Statement granting permission for the Lungs for Life Management Committee to use this proposal in discussion with potential external funders (if applicable).
  • Letter of support including pledge of matched funds and any in-kind support from the applicant’s institution/s. Letter must be signed by a senior management who has the authority to guarantee financial support.

Track record

  • A track record of the applicant and the supporting senior researcher (maximum two A4 pages each. Include any significant career disruptions).

Publications

  • Publications over the last five years (2012-2017), excluding career disruptions (unlimited pages).

Format

  • All text must be submitted on A4 pages with a 2cm margin to the top, bottom, left and right. Text must be single line spaced, with size 12 Times New Roman font. No columns are permitted.

  • In the event of there being no suitable applicants the grant will not be awarded.
  • The award will be presented at the 2018 TSANZ ASM, however the successful applicant will be notified prior to the ASM.
